Why Cake Smash Sessions Are the Best Way to Celebrate a First Birthday

If there's one type of session that always leaves me smiling from ear to ear, it's a cake smash. There's something truly magical about watching a one-year-old discover a beautifully decorated cake for the very first time. The curiosity, the tentative first poke, and then, when they realise it tastes good, the absolute joy that follows. It's wonderful, and I get to capture every single moment.

What Actually Happens in a Cake Smash Session?

A cake smash session is so much more than just the cake moment. We break it down into three parts, and each one gives you a different set of gorgeous photos to treasure.

Part one: The portrait. We start with some beautiful, clean portraits of your little one in their birthday outfit. These are the classic, frame-worthy shots. Your baby looking their absolute best before things get deliciously messy.

Part two: The cake! This is the main event. We set up a themed backdrop with a specially decorated cake, and then we let your little one go for it. Some babies dive straight in with both hands. Others are a bit more cautious, poking at the icing and looking at us as if to say, "Am I really allowed to do this?" Either way, the expressions are priceless, and I'll be capturing it all.

Part three: Splash time. After the cake chaos, we pop your little one into a mini bath or splash setup for a clean-up session. These photos are always adorable. Big smiles, splashing water, and that wonderful sense of fun that one-year-olds are so brilliant at.

Why Do Parents Love Them?

I think it's because cake smash sessions capture something genuinely real. You can't pose a one-year-old, so what you get is pure, unfiltered reaction. The surprise, the delight, the concentration as they try to work out what this colourful, squishy thing is. Those genuine expressions are what make these photos so special.

Parents often tell me that their cake smash photos are among their absolute favourites. They capture a moment in time that passes so quickly. That magical stage where everything is new and exciting and worth exploring with both hands (and sometimes both feet).

What Do You Need to Bring?

Not very much at all, which is part of the beauty of it. Here's a quick checklist:

  • A birthday outfit for the portrait section (something you don't mind staying clean for about twenty minutes)
  • A cake smash outfit that will get messy, so keep it simple. A nappy and a tutu, a romper, or even just a vest works perfectly
  • A towel and change of clothes for afterwards
  • Your little one's favourite toy or comforter, handy for keeping them happy between setups
  • Any theme ideas so if you have a colour scheme or character in mind, let me know in advance and I'll coordinate the setup

I provide the backdrop, props, and all the setup. You just bring the birthday star and the cake. If you need recommendations for local cake makers who create fantastic smash cakes, I'm happy to share my favourites.

When Should You Book?

I'd suggest getting in touch a few weeks before your little one's first birthday. This gives us time to plan the theme and make sure we get a date that works for everyone. Sessions are held right here in the studio on Church Street in Monmouth, so there's no need to worry about the weather.

These sessions fill up quickly, especially around the warmer months, so it's worth booking early to make sure you get your preferred date.

It's Messy, Fun, and Absolutely Wonderful

A cake smash session is one of those lovely things where you get to celebrate a milestone, have a brilliant time doing it, and walk away with photos that you'll look back on for years to come. What's not to love?

If your little one's first birthday is coming up, get in touch and let's plan something special together.
